About Dr. Curnan

Photo of Dr. CurnanFrom an early age, Cindy was a seeker of love and guidance, traits that were absent from the family. The sci-fi classic Stranger in a Strange Land, by Robert Heinlein, introduced Cindy to the Fair Witness. The Fair Witness (within) sees you accurately - strengths, weaknesses, potential -  but does not judge you.  The Fair Witness can be trusted to see the whole truth of you and still want the best for you.  Our psyche requires this positive influence to neutralize the overly critical negative influences that damage our self image and esteem. Service became Cynthia's calling. The Fair Witness became the trait she most wanted to give to others and receive for herself. In the 80's, Cynthia took a course on Inner Guidance, which included meditation practice, bringing her Fair Witness even closer.  

 Teaching Inner Guidance, then  teaching Inner Guidance students to become Inner Guidance teachers was deeply fulfilling. Her inner guidance students included doctors, ministers, and therapists.  Working with them inspired Cynthia to further her education, specifically psychology. Licensed as a psychotherapist in 1992 and earning a PhD in 1996, Dr Curnan built a full practice by being a Fair Witness using respected methodologies and best practices. 

 In 1996, Dr Curnan had her first EMDR experience. Her EMDR therapist, was a personal friend treating veterans with battle trauma.  EMDR blew away everything that had come before. Inner Guidance remained her sacred principal and EMDR seemed to be the missing element for repairing extensive childhood trauma and gifting her with brand new future post trauma possibilities.  

 She realized she had long been mistakenly trying to repair herself by becoming a overactive perfectionist. Her book The Care and Feeding of Perfectionists (Northstar Publications '98), became the result of depth self-study, plus study of all who came into view. Volunteers from her psychotherapy practice wanted to share their stories of trauma induced self-misunderstanding into self-destructive forms of perfectionism, eating disorders, addictions, anxiety, depressive and mood disorders.  

 A curriculum of EMDR  replaces the missing elements, repairs damage and misunderstandings, restores health,  bestows accurate self-knowledge, makes peace with the past . Matching  this with positive psychology resets the future. To over-simplify: the task is letting the right hemisphere of the brain coordinate and collaborate with the left hemisphere. Once we can feel our healing taking place,  then we can relax from sensing  All is or will be well..
